Ellie got a new room on Wednesday of last week. The first two nights were deceptively easy as far as transition. But then Friday she discovered she could get out! The next two nights were awful. She was falling asleep the first time okay, after about an hour and at least 3 trips to the bathroom. She'd get out of bed but would always go back good.
But the real problems is she's waking up in the middle of the night needing to go to the bathroom then can't go back to sleep. She is always exhausted at this point and hysterical. Saturday night she was awake for over 3 hours and finally fell asleep on the floor on her side of the door after much screaming and yelling. Sorry neighbors! You may think us cruel for closing the door on her but that was after we'd tried everything else & laid by her for almost an hour. Thanks Wade for taking her that night.
But good news last night was better. It still took her about 2 hours to finally fall asleep and she got out of bed probably 7 times :) But when she woke up in the night, I took her to the bathroom, laid by her until she fell asleep and then was back in my bed within 10 minutes. She still only slept from 10-7:30 so thats a problem but still an improvement from the past few nights. Hopefully, we've turned a corner & things will continue to improve. It seems as though we're conquering two battles at once though--making the transition to a big bed & staying dry through the night. She has stayed dry the last 2 nights and woken up when she needed to go.
Here's a picture of the big girl on her first night.
And here are the pictures of the new room. It took us a couple days to get it all put together & there are still a few things to do. But Ellie loves it and it turned out pretty cute.

The new room is cute. I like the wicker furniture. Where did you get it? You nights remind me of Ali and Ashling at your house. :)
It is okay to close the door to her room and let her cry it out again. That is the easiest way for her to learn. Be careful about laying down with her. Remember that you didn't do that before and if you do it now she may always expect it. And it may never help her go to sleep anyways. All it will do is make it so the grown ups don't get to spend anytime together at night.
Hope you guys are doing well!
I love her big girl bed, too! What an adventure--transitioning to a big bed can be so hard! I've always done it before potty training, so we don't have the "bathroom break" problem in the night. I can't believe she gets up to go--that's amazing! Girls are so different from boys!!! Stick it out and things are sure to improve little by little. We have to lock Luke's door, too, or who knows where he would end up in the middle of the night!
p.s. Want to meet in St. George with Luke and Ellie one of these days?
By the way, how did you make those cute pictures for Ellie's wall? I love them!
john still gets up sometimes in the night, (last week we woke up around 5:30am and found him asleep on our hardwood floor!) but thankfully haven't had one of the "screaming fits" for a couple of weeks. those are definitely NOT fun and we hope they are behind us. now if you could just give us potty-training tips...
